Introduction
Leadership is more than just making people obey your orders or moving them from point X to point Y. Effectiveness of a leaders comes from the aspect how appropriately one utilises one's hard as well as soft skills to influence others. What one can learn from Leader A is that one needs to respect others to earn respect and as a leader one needs to be humane with their actions and decisions (Hitt, M., Haynes, K. and Serpa, R., 2010). In fact, the style of leadership needs to be changed and adapted as per the situation, however essence of ethical leadership always threads together any style taken into consideration.

With subtle analysis of which skill will work best in a particular scenario, a leader is able to determine how well his or her followers are influenced to move ahead or may even pivot their own direction (Zhuo, J. 2019). Essentially, difference between a soft influence and hard influence tactics is basically the amount of liberty an individual has to deny the influence of leader. If a leader has very hard influence tactics then it is similar to one seen in military and defence forces where the leader on the top command and rest of the cohort follows without questioning or doubting what is been said. Softer tactics are more internal that basically probes person to align his or her action as that of leader. While the influence generated from hard tactics are more instant and prompter as well as result or outcome can be seen immediately, this kind of tactics isn’t long lasting or durable. This is because use of hard influence can strain the relationship that make future attempts to influence much more problematic. While on the other hand soft influence and its tactics may not show immediate results but is very long lasting. Once this influence works then a person will always follow the command voluntarily (Boal, K. and Hooijberg, R., 2000). Soft Influence proves to be much more powerful than Hard Influence in long run. This is also referred as strategic leadership since it focuses on making relationships and taking actions based on the future prospective.
Essentially there are eleven tactics of influence that a leader might use as per the requirement of situation. All these eleven tactics of influence emerges from both hard influence that is largely directive and authoritative and from soft influence which more indirect as well as collaborative (Elenkov, D., Judge, W. and Wright, P., 2005).
1. Pressure - This tactic creates influence by creating urgence. This can be done by the virtue of demands, threats, fear or intimidation to convince others to adhere with the norm and given target.
2. Assertiveness - This tactic creates influence by making requests, presenting deadlines for the deliverables and timeline for the project. This influence can also express through anger when the followers don’t follow the guidelines and breach the proposed deadlines
3. Legitimating - This tactic creates influence by persuasion. Art of persuading others to perform certain action or use a certain product and following up with them such that they agree to given norm (Elenkov, D., Judge, W. and Wright, P., 2005).
4. Coalition - This tactic creates influence through supporting others such that they are persuaded to perform the required action. Mostly, these tactics tries to lay a path for the followers to walk on and in turn they perform the actions are directed to them (Prentice, W. 2004).
5. Exchange - This tactic tries to seek influence by making exclusive or implicit promise. For instance, if you are able to bring ten new customers in next month you will receive double sale bonus. There is always a tangible benefit associated if the follower complies with the request. Otherwise, the follower can remind others of favour that one needs to reciprocate to sustain the relationship
6. Appeals to Higher Authority - In this kind of influence tactics, one seeks approval or confirmation from those present in higher authority. By its nature, this tactic looks for a kind of acceptance from those whom one keeps above oneself or present in the position of power.
7. Ingratiating - In this kind of influence tactics one tries to get others to perform certain action only if they are in a certain mood or if they have an inclination to perform something
8. Rational Persuasion - This kind of influence actually believes in winning others through logical arguments and factual evidence. These tactics believe in making the other understand the underlying rational towards the stimulus.
9. Personal Appeal - This kind of influence believe in associating personal experience with certain actions. Others comply trying to comprehend the personal association or may even treat it as a special favour relying on the interpersonal relationships.
10. Inspirational Appeals - In this kind of influence tactics there is focus on creating action from within by the virtue of emotional appeals. Person can arouse enthusiasm and urgence by captivating the followers and appealing to them by the virtue of ideals, values and vision by increasing the confidence and likeability to achieve the goal.
11. Consultation - In this kind of influence tactics one seeks influence by the virtue of participation from others. For instance, contribution of thoughts that can help in making certain decisions or organising how to execute strategies and actions with respect to goal in mind.
