Introduction
Leadership is the process through which the top hierarchy of the organization creates interpersonal dynamics. The leaders try to influence and motivate the people by collaborating them to do purposeful things. It helps us in understanding the reason of the influence, how the influencing is accomplished and how the people think and feels due to such influences from the leaders. Influences of leaders helps in allowing and empowering the people to do what they should do to achieve the organizational goals. In leadership the leaders should not get involve themselves and the people of the organization in manipulative and coercive behaviours and force the people to act according to their wishes. Effective leadership in organization not only helps the people to realize their hidden potentials but also helps the individual achieve the personal goals by his contribution towards the team. Hence, it is the leaders who try to congregate people from diverse background and influence them positively to achieve the organizational objectives.
Analysis
(A) Leadership influences the organization culture and it can be harmful if the words and actions of the leaders are not used are not conscious and for achieving purposeful objectives. The leaders should supervise, follow up and be accountable for their own actions. Else the team members might lose faith in your influence and your words. Employees will copy those behaviours and repeat it when the leaders will want more from them. Hence, the ways leaders should influence the organizational culture are as follows:
1. Model behaviours: The leaders need to be an example towards his employees. It is the leader who will encourage the people to change their habits and behaviours, lead from the front and communicate the expectations for the change. The employees will always try to replicate the leaders and his behaviour. The leaders need to change his behaviours and act politely and should not be authoritative. Hence, the leaders need to change his own behaviour first to change the habits of his employees.
2. Building Trust: A leadership must develop trust within the employees of the company. He must be specific with his goals and objective and allocate the employees with clear cut roles and responsibilities which can positively impact the organization. If there is no defined goals people will move in different directions resulting in a clutter. But, if leaders have a clear purpose, then it can deliver the employees opportunities and clarity to emotionally connect and join the leader to acquire the objectives efficiently. For example in a bank, if the objective of the company is to provide exceptional customer service, then each of the person involved like the Branch manager, assistant managers, staffs and cleaners should ensure that they understands their roles and delivers them efficiently. For this communication by the leader at different levels of the bank for the ways each employees should perform their specific job is extremely important.
3. Setting expectations and help people to build the requisite skills: The leaders must take initiatives to build the professional skills required for achieving the desired organization objectives. To achieve this, the people need to be equipped with various tools, techniques, resources which will help them to learn and grow as well as make them confident and make them fit impeccably for achieving organizational goals. The people must be trained and coached properly so they can help to achieve the mission, values and vision of the organization through regular communication. The employees of the organization should also be evaluated based on their annual performance. The leaders should take steps to communicate with the employees and ensure that the various difficulties and loopholes they are facing are mitigated through more training and communication so that they can be successful contributors towards achieving the organizational objectives. Hence, leaders should set expectations on the employees and offer them the essential help to become successful contributors.
4. Leaders should emphasize the culture of accountability: Leaders try to strengthen the culture of the organization through implementation of accountability. When the leaders communicates and enquires about the accountability of the employees, they feels and understands their role and are accountable for the tasks allocated to them. The organizational goals will not be achievable without being accountable. The leaders must supervise the individual and check the way the individual goals are being achieved, whether the systems and the internal processes and cultural basics are in place or not. Hence, the leader should strategies a detailed job description by incorporating accountability as a part of the organizational culture so that the employees can understand their roles easily and get a comprehensible idea of how success looks like. Also, there should be transparency when strategizing the culture of accountability. The measures to judge the performances of the employees needs to be changes and defined annually with specific deliverables.
5. Leadership at personal and emotional level: The leaders must emphasize on the emotional and personal levels of the employees in order to achieve the desired objectives. Making an organizational culture which will help to easily achieve the organizational objectives will be rational but will not encourage the employees until their emotional levels are satisfied by the leaders. Hence, the leaders will makes the necessary changes in the organizational culture and it can be delicate. Yet, to achieve those changes comfortably the leaders must bank upon the emotional level of the employees through their actions and words.
