Dutch Apology for Indonesian Colonial Atrocities Opens Old Wounds
https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/se-asia/dutch-apology-for-indonesian-colonial-atrocities-opens-old-wounds
The article discusses mixed receptions of the Dutch government’s compensations and apology for the massacres during Indonesia’s independence movement. How should we evaluate this act ofapology---Is it not enough because it was an apology for the atrocities, but not for colonial rule per se? Was it unnecessary given the negative reactions from Indonesian people? What other countries face a similar issue of “memory” and “apology” in Asia, and how would you compare them?
