Analysis of the mechanical elements of a mechanical ventilator using a bag valve mask
The mechanical ventila
tor is used to compress the Bag Valve Mask in a periodic manner. The setup is quite simple and consists of 7 links connected by bolts. The motor provides torque to the first link and thus the motion translates to the oscillation of the two rocker arms. The bag valve mask is placed between the two rocker arms. Here is a picture of the setup-
The rocker arms will have a maximum load of about 35N. This means that each arm will have a load of about 17.5N. This is a very normal load condition which can be easily sustained by mild steel as it has a yield strength of about 250N/mm². Mild steel is also ductile enough and can sustain varying loads. Thus, mild steel is the material of choice for this purpose. Mild steel requires a factor of safety of 1.5-2. So, taking the factor of safety=2, we will be able to fulfil our requirements.
Factor of Safety (FOS) = 2
Some of the requirements are-
1. The components that are screwed together will need at least three threads.
2. The...
