Task
An organisation named Red is considering the impact of cyber-vetting that they started using only recently on the applicants/new employees. They have engaged you as a consultant to write a brief report on the cyber-vetting as a selection method, impacts of cyber-vetting on the psychological contract of new employees, and implications this may have for Red. They provided you with the three scenarios and expect you to analyse advantages and disadvantages of each of these scenarios in terms of their impact on new employee psychological contract (e.g., validity, procedural fairness, trust, privacy, organisational commitment, decision to work for this employer):
- The organisation informs applicants that they are using cyber-vetting in their recruitment and selection process, and that as part of this process they will check each applicant's social media accounts
- The organisation uses cyber-vetting, but they do not inform applicants about this as they assume the information provided in social media is public.
- The organisation does not use cyber-vetting, and the selection decision is made based on traditional recruitment and selection methods
What is your conclusion on the use of cyber-vetting in the selection process?
Increasing use of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, provides employers and recruiters with a source of information about applicants. Recruiters may wish to have access to applicants’ social media sites to determine whether a candidate would be a good fit for the organisation. The focus of this assignment is on exploring your views on the use of social media in the selection process (and the vetting process), its advantages, limitations and consequences. The scenario provided above presents a practical and an ethical dilemma for job applicants as social media blurs the line between what is public and what is private.
This assignment may be used for research purposes (de-identified and anonymous), and in this case you will receive information on the research project, contact person that is able to answer your queries about the research project, and instructions on how to withdraw from participation in the research project. Participation in the research project will have no impact on your marks in this subject, and is based on your voluntary choice.
