Assessment Details Assessment 1(A): Research Proposal Weight: 30% Due date: 5pm Tuesday the 31st of March (Week 4) Length: 1,500 Words (+/-10%) exclusive of references Purpose/Learning Outcomes: This assessment relates to ULO 1, ULO2, ULO3, ULO4 Task Students will conduct independent research and prepare a research proposal concerning a real-world global / international problem. The research proposal should provide an introduction to the chosen topic, and synthesise their preliminary findings about the global problem, the governance arrangements, and current policing and/or justice responses to it. Students must select one of the following topics: International Trafficking (drugs, goods, people, and possibility of cyber dimension – pick one ‘commodity’ see Chapters 1-22 of set text for examples) Corporate Crime with Environmental Impacts Mobility and Borders Impact of colonisation on First Nations peoples Academic Sources Students will need to refer to relevant academic (books, journal articles, book chapters) and public policy sources (government reports, policy papers, parliamentary transcripts, UN documents) relevant to the real world probelm. Use the set text as a starting point to guide your independent research, but do not rely solely on it. It is important that you use your research and critical evaluation skills to evaluate the veracity of the sources you cite. For this reason, it is not a good idea to cite Wikipedia. All sources must be properly cited in text and a correctly formatted reference list must be provided in either Harvard or APA style (word count is exclusive of references). Suggested layout/structure Please note that it is not expected that the research project be finalised at this stage, but rather this is an opportunity for students to receive detailed written feedback on their preliminary ideas and independent research completed to date. The research proposal should follow an outline of an essay structure with an introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction should introduce the international problem (one of the topics listed above) that is being examined and outline the structure (main arguments) of the proposal. The body should follow a logical paragraph structure and should: a) describe the problem being examined and the global governance arrangements and responses to it, then; b) lead towards their preliminary ideas concerning proposals for responses to the problem. The conclusion should provide a summary of the main arguments explored, and outline the next steps in developing the proposal into the research report (such as further research to be conducted, further reflection or analysis, further exploration of certain aspects of the problem – remember this is a work in progress leading towards your major research report). Students are encouraged to organise their proposal using subheadings. The suggested structure and subheadings are as follows: Introduction Examination of problem (i.e. summary of the problem being addressed, including impacts) Examination of the governance arrangements (i.e. international law, treaties, institutions) Examination of the responses (i.e. policing, surveillance, justice arrangements) Preliminary ideas to improve governance and responses (your thoughts and review of strategies, and what could be improved?) Conclusion and research plan (next steps) References Professional presentation: Your policy proposal must be either 1.5 or double spaced and in Times New Roman 12 point font. It is important to make your work look as professional as possible.
