Maryanne is a 28-year-old female who has come to counseling for the first time. She is the oldest of three children and reports that her parents are still married. She was referred to treatment by a physician who was concerned about her weight fluctuations and her admission to him of amphetamine use. She entered a combination inpatient/ outpatient treatment and completed it about three weeks ago. She has not attended any self-help groups in her community, even though she was given referrals, because she did not want to bring further shame to her family. In her intake session, Maryanne reports a pattern of immersing herself in different addictive behaviors during her life. For example, for a time, she was involved with alcohol, then sex, then religion, then drugs, each in an addictive manner that appeared serial in nature. During the session, Maryanne brings food in with her: chips, cookies, candy, sugared soda, and the like. She eats these rapidly during the session and then midway through the session she says she needs to use the bathroom. When she returns, she appears slightly pale.

1. What do you say to Maryanne about her behavior when she returns from using the bathroom?

2. How do you need to work with other professionals to be helpful to this client?

3. What type of treatment plan would you develop for Maryanne?
