Marking Scheme Palliative Care Interventions Module Title: Palliative Care Interventions Academic level: 5 Assessment Task: Using a case study, describe an intervention as experienced by a patient in the context of palliative care/end-of-life care. Describe and discuss the intervention, how it was experienced by the patient, and what its outcome was. Comment on what has been learned from the intervention. 2,000 words (100% of the module marks). Assessment Criteria and guidance follows the learning outcome which gives an indication as t o how each outcome can be achieved. • Identify issues in providing palliative care for people with both malignant and non malignant terminal illnesses. Identify a palliative care intervention and how it was experienced by the patient. Identify the concerns and requirements of the patient and their family. • Have an understanding of the research and ethics related to clinical issues in advanced illness. Use a discussion about a clinical issues in the advanced illness of your patient to comment on the ethics and research about the issue. What has been learnt and what are its practice implications. • Appreciate psychological support screening tools and assessment frameworks, and be aware of issues of reliability and validity. Have an awareness of the psychosocial impact of the advanced disease on the patient and their family, and have an awareness of the use of suitable psychological assessment tools. • Recognise the influence of transitions in chronic illness to palliation and end of life care. Consideration of policies and government initiatives for end of life care, and the multidisciplinary team approach in primary and secondary care. Discuss local and national policies about palliative can end of life care • Be aware of the impact of complex symptoms in palliative care. Consideration of the multi-dimensional nature of complex symptoms, pharmacological and non-pharmacological palliative interventions, and the therapeutic process of managing people with complex symptoms and referral to other services.
