Mark and Brandon come to your office concerned about a referral from the school system about their 8-year-old son, Harry. Harry has had difficulties in school since kindergarten and the school believes that testing is required to determine if Harry has a learning disability. Your clients are anxious about their son being “diagnosed” and “labeled.” Additionally, the parents mention they recently moved into a more affluent neighborhood and school system. Testing in the educational setting causes high anxiety for parents and the children involved. Counselors are challenged to advocate for assessments that recognize the impact of culture including socioeconomic status. Counselors must advocate socially marginalized populations and use caution to avoid “labeling.”
1. How can you help avoid the use of labels and share information with your clients in a non-judgmental manner?
2. How can you incorporate social justice into your counseling practice?
3. In what ways can you provide assessment that respects cultural identity of your client?
