Mapping Oshawa’s Musical Legacies during the Period 1964-79: Focused Mapping

(Digital or Analog), Original Archival Research, Category Creation, Annotation. Value

40 marks.
Due Nov. 14
.

This is a major research assignment that will require the generation of
original
findings

based on the creative use of archival and other similar resources. The scheduled public

library visit is important for your success.
This assignment may be done in groups of

either two or three, and singly, but no more than three.

Create or adapt an existing Oshawa map to suit your objective (the focus will be the

downtown). Yes, by map I mean map with streets on it, augmented by icons that you will

create. Google maps are useful templates. You are required to remake and remodel an

existing map and to annotate them as well. Your annotations will be informed by

categories relevant to your search results and your period of focus – not the entire 1964-

79 period, but a representative period, such as a cluster of years, maybe less, depending

on what is found by your research. The map you are producing, and the accompanying

explanatory materials (annotations as footnotes or other accompanying texts), shows the

cultural resources of Oshawa’s musical heritage in the downtown area (some

geographical flexibility is allowable, of course, in order to indicate nearby sites, but how

you integrate these is a design problem to be solved). How you understand musical

heritage resources will be key to your project.

You must also explain how your map is to be used – remotely, online? By solitary

walkers? Groups out for a field trip? Do they all need cell phones? Or at least online

access at home? To this end, then, one non-content focused annotation will take the form

of a short “User’s Guide” and must be included in your final map package.

Find a suitable medium in which to work (i.e., you can use a hand drawn poster which

you can then photograph) or create everything digitally, but I would
not
recommend

using Power Point.

Integrate narrative materials and or links, or text blocks, or images. What is important to

know? Since not much of any story can be told directly on a map/maps, annotations are

required – footnotes, back pages, supplements, etc. Imagine you are a visitor to the city

with an interest in either local history and/or music, what would you create for such a

person to understand the formative musical legacy of the City of Oshawa? Would you

create both (or only one) a digital and or analog version (paper pamphlet)? Imagine this

scenario: if somebody picked up one of your pamphlets at a local shop, what would it tell

them and how would they use it?

The data for this assignment, besides a few examples from class lectures, will be

generated and sorted by you, student researcher. This data is not something available on

Google but must be dug out of a variety of less visible local source materials.
