Many people express their reason for believing in God with expressions like: “Something must have made this universe, it couldn’t have just come from nowhere.” or “The goodness, beauty, and wisdom I see in the universe had to come from somewhere.” or “Everything has to have an explanation, so there must be something that explains the universe.” Have you ever heard these or similar expressions? These are all informal versions of a cosmological argument. Take one of these expressions and expand it into a full cosmological argument. How do you think the objections to Aquinas’ cosmological argument would apply to these informal versions of the cosmological argument?
