MANAGE PROJECT STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT
Should you think of stakeholders in groups or segments?
A stakeholder is any individual or group that affects or is affected by the actions on a project.
Grouping of stakeholders into specific segments can help understand their nature and the nature of
their relationships in a better way. Identification and grouping of stakeholders into segments require
an understanding of skills a specific group has, resources they have, and records of information with
the individ
ual or between the groups. Can be some questions that can be used for exploring these
stakeholder segments such as:
 What is the region in which the project is taking place?
 Whose practices would be changed with the project?
 What is relative importance between each segment and the project?
 What are the demographics of each segment?
 What would be affected by the project in the people?
 What would drive people on project?
 At what level of the project cycle these segments are in?
 Who would be affected by the project?
 How does the project fit with the specific audience?
Answer to these questions would help in determining the stakeholder segments. Some techniques
can be used to get he answers to these questions to identify stakeholder segments such as:
 A brainstorming session could be conducted with the key project members to identify
stakeholder segments
 Already existing stakeholders can be taken advise of for identification of segments
 Expression of interest may be called from the stakeholders
 The stakeholder can be classified based on their relationships with the project
Some possible stakeholder segments on a project could be community organizations, local
government, research bodies, industrial organizations, regulators, and so on (GHD, 2010).
How can you influence your stakeholder?
There can be several ways project stakeholders can be influenced
 Stakeholders can b engaged early and through the project life cycle by taking suggestions,
and asking questions. The method that may be used to involve stakeholders could be
determined on the basis of the influence stakeholder has on the project.
 Benefit that each stakeholder is likely to receive from the project must be clearly communicate
to the stakeholder so that his or her buy in can be sought.
 A very clear and organized communication plan can be created and used for communicating
with stakeholders
 A stakeholder mapping can be useful in understanding the stakeholder and their relationships
better which would include examination of some key factors about stakeholder like
demographics, interests, concerns, requirements, and expectations. Project management
strategies can be formulated base on these factors for individual or group of stakeholders.
 The feedback can be taken from stakeholders on the planning and the progress of the project
to understand their expectations better and they should be taken care of by appropriate
actions (Gaborit, 2015).
External Stakeholders of a Project
External stakeholders are the individuals or groups that are involved directly with the project work
but can influence or be influence by the project. This includes:
Customers: Customers of the project include those people or entities that are the end users or
consumers of the products or services developed as a result of project. They have to be kept
informed about the key benefits that they are likely to get from the project. They are involved in the
requirement gathering as it is important that all their expectations are met by the project. Once the
project s completed, they would be submitted the deliverables and approval would be taken for
acceptance of deliverables from them.
Suppliers: Suppliers of the project include the service providers and vendors. The vendors would be
part of contracts that would include deliveries of equipments or materials required for execution of
the project. Suppliers have to be kept informed about the requirements of the project such that they
can provide required services.
Communities: Various communities could be affected by or could be influencing the project and
thus, have to be considered important for the project. Inputs are taken from these stakeholders
during requirement gathering while progress of the project is informed to them. Community support
is important to receive if a project has to succeed.
