Making Inferences Several years ago, a high school principal canceled his school’s senior prom when it was brought to his attention that perhaps a dozen students were planning to bring dates from other races. A reaction this extreme is rare, but strong cultural norms about interracial dating do exist. These norms vary by class and region. Recent studies have shown that over half of all teens in the United States have dated someone of another race, but interracial marriages are not common. Why do you think people might be willing to date but not marry outside their race?
