Making Inferences About 96 percent of all Americans say they believe in God. Nevertheless, defining who is or is not religious is very difficult. Some people don’t go to church yet claim to be religious, while others go to church but don’t seem to be religious, for example. What dilemmas do all these issues present for sociologists who want to study religiosity? What variables could help to explain what religiosity is?
