ACADEMIC WRITING
1) a)     One of the central themes in Beowulf is heroic code. The characteristic features displayed in the Anglo Saxon society were bravery, chivalry, courage. It was considered that the heroes would even give up their lives fighting for what is necessary. As Wiglaf says for Beowulf “vowed you would never let your name and fame / be dimmed while you lived’, Beowulf died after a fight with the dragon and displayed his heroic qualities
(Bolton).
The dragon`s treasure symbolizes the pride that is associated with the human wishes and the irreversibility of time. The treasure is filled with wealth but no person remains alive to utilize it. Only the ‘keeper of the rings’ was alive to bury the treasure (Bolton).
The main plot of Beowulf includes the heroic deed of Beowulf fighting against the dragonl. In a ferocious battle that was fought, Beowulf fatally wounded the dragon that died. Wiglaf visits the battle site in order to find the "fifty foot-paces" corpse of the dragon along with dead Beowulf.
b) The primary theme presented in that of Sir Gawain and the Green Knights is the nature of chivalry. It was considered that a knight should possess varied virtues which include chastity, friendship, generosity, and so on. The ranking of the individuals in the society was dependent on the behaviour displayed. Arthur was addressed to in the poem as ‘most courteous of all’ (Quod).
The colour gold symbolizes prosperity of Sir Gawain Here gold is not referred to as riches but is considered to be the richness in character. ‘When he was hasped in armour his harness was noble/The least lace or loop was lustrous with gold../And all was arrayed on red with nails of richest gold’ (Quod). The narrator describes that the armour of Sir Gawain was as sparkling as gold so as to protect the golden heart of Sir Gawain (Burrow).
‘The Challenge’ is the initial plot of the story in which the Green Knight, on entering the court of King Arthur, challenged Arthur`s men. The challenge was this that one of the court men would strike a blow on the Green Knight, but if the Green Knight is still alive he would return back after one year and a day later. Sir Gawain strikes Green Knight, but the huge figure is still alive. So Sir Gawain is reminded to visit at the Green Chapel during the decided time period. As in the words of the Green Knight, ‘If any so hardy in this house holds himself,/ is so bold of blood, hot-brained in his head,/ that dare staunchly strike a stroke for another..’(Quod).
c) One of the primary themes in One Thousand and One Night is rise from poverty to riches. The protagonists of the story of ‘Arabian nights’, did not possess ant wealth in the beginning but with the help of Alladin`s lamp he became rich. As in Alibaba and the Forty thieves, wealth was discovered in a cave that opened only when the words ‘Open Sesame’ are pronounced (Mahdi).
‘Wealth’ in the story Alladin is used as a symbol in order to show that riches does not make a person happy. It might end starvation but it snatches away the individuality from a person. It can be seen in the conversation between Alladin and Jasmine after looking at the palace, ‘You are not free to make your own choice’(Mahdi).
One of the plots in one Thousand and One Night is when Alibaba discovers the wealth that is hidden in a cave by the forty thieves. Being a poor person, Alibaba used to work in the fields and one day he witnessed that forty thieves came in and chanted ‘Open Sesame’ to open the cave door ((Mahdi). After the thieves left, Alibaba pronounced the same words in order to enter the cave and discover the riches hidden in it.
d) The primary theme incorporated in the poem inferno is the idea of punishment. It is stated that every crime or sin that an individual takes part In is associated with certain punishment. In accordance to the intensity of the sin, individuals are sent to different layers of hell. Pier della Vigna is found by Vigil and Dante in the seventh circle of hell as he was punished for ending his own life. ‘Since he is silent, do not lose/ this chance, but speak and ask what you would know’ as said by Vigil because Dante pities suicide and does not say anything after listening to the story of Pier della Vigna (Brown).
One of the symbolic ideas used in the poem Inferno is through the character of Geryon. The character is depicted in the poem to contain the head of an innocent man but the body is that of a serpent. This symbolizes dishonesty and deceit.
One of the major plots...
