1. What is the functional relationship between the peripheral and central nervous systems?
1. Reflex behavior is designed to be protective in some way or another. Choose a specific reflex and discuss how each part of a reflex arc interplay with the other to accomplish that goal.
3. IIn 1968, a girl playing near train tracks fell under a train. The wheel of the train cleanly cut off her left arm. Surgeons reattached her arm, sewing vessels and nerves back together. The girl, an avid softball player, was told she would eventually regain use of her arm but it would never be strong enough to play pitcher. Explain why recovery of full strength was unlikely following this type of injury.
4. What are the homeostatic variables controlled by the hypothalamus? How do these functions logically integrate with this pattern of control?
5. Mrs. Smith suffers from a hypoactive bladder and subsequent urinary retention. To manage her symptoms, her doctor prescribed bethanechol, a drug that mimics acetylcholine's autonomic effects. Why did Mrs. Smith's physician prescribe bethanechol? Which of the following side effects would you expect Mrs. Smith to experience while taking this medication (select all that apply): excessive sweating, cramping, diarrhea, deficient salivation, increased mucus production in the bronchi, wheezing, deficient tear formation, low blood pressure, or dizziness.
