(M) Dialysis is a medical process that is used in patients experiencing lost kidney function. The primary role of a dialysis machine is to filter out waste and excess water from the blood. Dialysis works on the principle of diffusion across a semipermeable membrane. Blood flows out of the patient into a dialyzer and past a semipermeable membrane, on the other side of which dialysate fluid flows in the opposite direction. Waste substances will pass across the semipermeable membrane from an area of higher concentration in the blood into an area of lower concentration in the dialysate fluid. You are interested in writing a model that tracks the rate of removal of the waste compound urea from blood passing through the dialyzer. Assume that no urea passes from the dialysate back into the bloodstream.
