The novel “Little Women” can be considered a ‘cultural milestone’ that remains unchanged over the years ever since it was first published in 1868 authored by Louisa Alcott May. This
“cultural milestone” relates to the internal message of the story that remains universal from time to time. The message is that there have always been women who have been different and unique, who have sought to change the status quo. These women might not have succeeded at a national level yet they have always been there and they always will. On the other hand, the adaptations of the novel has changed consistently with the directors and producers personal thoughts regarding the novel, like the latest adaptation released in 2019, directed by the acclaimed director Greta Grewig, that seems to be strictly ‘modern’ in its terms.
The struggle of women in earlier days is not unknown to the world. Some of this struggle continues even today. Women struggle to find their place in society in every age. This is clearly demonstrated by Alcott in her novel “Little Women”, a message that has become largely universal as people connect with the same fact over years. The story of “Little Women” revolves around the lives of four girls and their girlhood struggles and how they grow through them. The main connects of the story is the feminist message that looms over the entire novel, even when it ends with the ‘Little Women’ getting married. The idea that women struggle and persevere through the trials they go through is the central theme. Even if the outcomes are not perfect, the novel wants to convey that it is fine to struggle, make mistakes and fix those mistakes. All of that forms a part of life.
The novel deals with the eternal theme of women’s role in the world; Women as family, women as daughter and women as a part of society. It also revolves around universal truths like loss, love, courage and grief. The characters of the story, Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy, represent different types of women.
