Introduction
Teaching is a noble profession. Through this profession, people are able to make others aware of various issues such as political, social, environmental and cultural. Teachers impart education (Biesta, 2017). They are considered as Gods in certain countries. However, from ancient times it was seen that teachers also faced problems while trying to deliver their learnings to the people since those learnings collided with cultural, political or social beliefs.
This report contains the issues, which beginner teachers face in educating the people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islands and even the methods, by which the teachers tackle those issues (Marom, 2017). This report also comprises issues that the teachers face while managing the behaviour issues of the students in the classrooms and how they overcome them. In this report, how the teachers critically analyse the situation and support the students coming from different socioeconomic backgrounds are also described in detail.
Issue 1: Problems Faced by Beginner Teachers in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders as well as ways, in which they can overcome them
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander are two different groups of people who reside in Australia. Aboriginal people refer to the native people of mainland Australia whereas Torres Strait Islanders refer to the indigenous people living in the 274 islands, which are located north of Australia, part of the state of Queensland, Australia.
However, in recent times, more Torres Strait Islander (Bennett, Redfern & Zubrzycki, 2018) people are living on the mainland rather than on the islands. Both the groups are culturally very diverse from each other. For this particular reason, the teachers face problems while educating them. The beginner teachers face this issue more because they are completely new to the system.
Problems
The problems, which the teachers faced, are listed below as follows:
Language Barrier
Most of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait students do not understand English since their first language is not English. They speak and under their regional languages such as Torres Strait Creole, Warlpiri and Lajamanu, which are a mixture of standard Australian English and conventional languages (Heaton, 2019).
Thus, the students are unable to understand the teachings of the teachers as well as they are not able to say their problems to the teachers because the teachers are not efficient in those languages. This problem is more prominent in rural areas than in urban regions because modernisation has evolved the lives of the people living in the cities but this has not yet reached the rural areas.
Inappropriate Text
The students are given examples of such stories, which have no relation with the Aboriginal origins (Fernando & Bennett, 2019). Thus, the students do not get the enthusiasm to study and learn new things because they are not told stories about their races. Once they generate interest then only they would develop the interest to learn more things.
Insufficient Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander History
A study was conducted to see the contents of the textbooks. It was revealed from the studies that even the 21st century textbooks do not contain much information about the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. The indigenous natives are mentioned in minute portions of the textbooks and they are said to have appeared only shortly.
On the other hand, the textbook provides a detailed analysis of the history and evolution of the non-Aboriginal Australians (Lowe, 2017). Thus, the students cannot relate to the characters and lose their interests in the studies. Therefore, the students perform badly academically. It is important to know about other things but one develops the interest to learn new things only when they have knowledge about their own things.
Lack of Cultural Awareness of the Teachers
Most of the teachers do not know the cultural background of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait people. The teachers think that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait students are quieter and subtle learners and they need time to understand the concepts. However, that is not the case. The students have the ability to catch the things the teachers teach them and they are not slow learners (Peralta, Cinelli & Bennie, 2018).
It is the environment, which affects the students mentally. They become traumatised and they refuse to learn anything. The students become insecure and consider themselves inferior because they think they are not given importance as they belong to a race, which almost has no existence.
Uneducated Parents
This is one of the main problems, why the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders’ children do not want to get educated. The uneducated parents do not understand societal norms and lack civic sense. They do not know the importance of education in the current world and obstruct their way from accessing it. They say it is better to get involved in doing menial work to support the parents rather than going to schools to gain education.
The Native Welfare organisation of Australia used to take away those children whose one parent was white until the 1970s (Weuffen, 2019). Thus, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders live in the constant fear that until date, that if they send their wards to schools then they would never be able to see them for the rest of their life.
Bad Memories of School
The students refuse to go to schools because they are not taught anything about their ethnic origins and even they are not allowed to speak in their own languages. They find it difficult to survive in the harsh conditions, to which they are subjected.
