The Problem
In a game of ‘Guess Your card’ that I am playing with three other players, Andy, Belle and Carol
, I have to guess my own cards after getting one clue each from two other players.
Details:
Andy’s cards: 1 3 7
Belle’s cards: 3 4 7
Carol’s cards: 4 6 8
Andy says ‘Yes’ when asked if sum of cards of two or more players is same.
Belle says she sees all odd numbers, when asked how many different odd numbers she sees between 1 and 9.
The problem is to guess my own cards using the above information and clues.
The Approach
The ‘Process of Elimination’ should be used to solve this problem. By taking one clue at a time, the information obtained should be deduced and conclusions should be drawn based on the mathematical knowledge that you possess about odd numbers. Mathematical calculations should be done based on the given information about others’ cards and the clues should be studied one at a time. All data should be collected.
