Locke gives a list of the characteristics of primary qualities when he discusses the “Qualities thus considered in bodies.” For example, he says that primary qualities are those that “sense constantly finds in every particle of matter.” Some of the characteristics of primary qualities lead him to say that primary qualities really exist in objects outside of us. Secondary qualities, however, do not really exist “in the objects themselves.” What do you think are the characteristics of primary qualities that lead Locke to say that objects outside of us have to possess the primary qualities we perceive?
