Question to answer in the summary : What is the difference between a social group and a collection of people and what can lead a collection of people say on the subway to become a group? Chapter 5 Summary
As per the sociology, the social group is formed as a result of interaction between two or more persons having quite similar ideas, unity and characteristics. The s
ocial groups may be a small group of people and together they form a society. The social group is more than just a group of aggregate person waiting in a bus stop and the only way to recognize whether the collection of people can be recognised as a social group is by the use of the word ‘we’ which refers to a collection of people. This states that the collection of people thinks of themselves as a group. Thus, when it comes to a social group sharing similar ideas and thoughts it can be a large family, clubs, companies, religious worshippers etc. Thus, as per (Durkheim, 1895) a social group is formed as a result of strength of ties or social integration which is an essential feature for being in a social life and culture. On the other hand, small groups of people can be a dyad which is a two member group and a triad which is a three member (Simmel, 1902) group sharing similar real-time ideas and knows each other. Of these groups if one person exits suppose a divorce happens, then the small group gets dissolved and becomes non-existence. Thus, the major difference between a social group and a small group is on the number of persons. On exit of a person from a social group, the company or the large family still exists. It cannot get dissolved until all the members’ exits the group. It is the common exchange and interaction of ideas that can lead the collection of people on to become a group. This gives rise to group leader which may vary based on the type of goals and objectives of the organization where instrumental leaderships focus is towards accomplishing the set targets or tasks.
