Let's pretend that an individual is granted probation instead of being incarcerated for an assault, and commits murder while on probation.
Probation was part of a plea bargain with the local district attorney's office. The local district attorney wants to reduce the number of people who are incarcerated.
The assigned probation officer has a heavy caseloadand has failed to check on the probationer in the weeks leading up to the murder.
Who would you want to be held accountable? The individual committing the offense? The probation officer? The judge who accepted the deal and granted probation instead of incarcerating the individual? The district attorney for not prosecuting to the fullest extent of the law? Some combination of all?
Who bears responsibility for the actions of those given probation instead of incarceration? Explain your rationale.
