Topic 1 – What is the difference between the trait and behaviour theories of leadership? Are these theories valid?
Trait Theory: -Taking reference from “Leadership: Theory and Practice”, (Northouse, P., 2013) essentially, this theory states that there are few characteristics that are common for a person to be considered as leaders. Such characteristics and attributes are categorised as traits that anyone is born with. It is also called as theory of virtue because this theory vouches for the fact that leaders are born with specific characteristic that manifests later in life ultimately making them standing out of the crowd and making sure that given a specific scenario such people would always outshine others.
Behaviorism: - On the other hand, this theory completely negates the theory of virtue or inborn traits that makes a person leader. Rather this theory focuses on the actions that a person should perform and certain kind of attitude he possesses that can differentiate them as leader or as rest of the crowd. Taking reference from “Effective leadership (1st ed.). London: Pan.”, (Adair, J., 2009) this theory vouches for the fact that leaders are not born rather they are trained and made. People can be trained to become leaders since there are certain traits that can be learnt and developed. Thus, any person who inspires to become a leader can become one but there must be provided a conducive environment for development of leadership qualities and nourishing them to grow stronger.
I believe that these theories are valid and has merit attached to their conclusions so derived. However, none provides a guarantee that the same can be applied in all the scenarios to achieve successful results of effective leadership. There is major difference between the Trait Theory and Behaviorism, since later one is more democratic in nature. As per the behaviourism school of thought, it is depending upon the appropriate training however, theory of virtue actually focuses on the specific few attributes that precisely be present in order for anyone to shine as leader. Organisation select the employees who has aptitude and attitude to learn and improve themselves every single day. Such employees are selected and developed to become future leaders
Topic 2: - Behaviour of Organisation is relative to the culture
Yes, indeed I strongly believe that behaviour of the organisation that essentially means the interpersonal skills, motivation, group behaviour, leadership style, management of conflicts and leadership style are all contingent to the culture. With business establishing itself beyond the boundaries of one countries it is extremely critical to be savvy with intercultural differences. A critical essence that governs the common behaviours and values among the people belonging to same culture influences who one’s act, perceives and think. All the culture has certain norms and values that members being accustomed to that take for granted while we on the other hand needs to be aware of them. One needs to acknowledge certain biases, understand beliefs and comprehend values such that while one is communicating with people in this culture makes the conversation much more effective. Therefore, culture does have a lot of impact on interpersonal skills, how people gets motivated and inspired. Correspondingly, taking into the consideration the complexities of culture an optimum style of leadership should be adopted since in some culture participative leadership works like...
