Lesson 8 Discussion with students
The responses to your classmates 2 of them

1st students discussion
I believe the response to infectious diseases through the current vaccination protocols are an important part in public health. It is very dangerous to let childhood diseases continue to be spread without following a protocol for irradiating the diseases. We have seen a reemergence of diseases such as Measles and Mumps do to the anti-vax movement that unfortunately was based upon false scientific studies and perpetuated by celebrities with no medical training. For example the US vaccination program and response to polio eliminated the disease from the US population altogether, this disease was highly contagious and known to cause paralysis and dealth as well as development of new issues from the disease 15-40 years after initial infection.

Select one of the infectious disease topics and explain what you feel is the most effective and efficient public health response to the example for that topic.

The infectious disease topic that I picked is smallpox. What I feel is the most effective and efficient public health response to the example for that topic is the way that it was eradicated. The early way that they tried to control the spread was to open a pustule and scratch into someone that did not have smallpox. This process was called variolation and was the first method for inoculation.

The vaccination process for smallpox started in 1796 from an English doctor named Edward Jenner. He took substance from a cowpox sore from person and put it in another person and that person never got smallpox. There were many more experiments and by the 1800’s the use of vaccines gained in popularity. The last known case of smallpox was in 1978 in the whole world. Smallpox became eradicated by 1980 which was announced by the World Health Organization (WHO).
