Lesson 5 Discussion with students
1st students discussion
One of the reasons chain of command is so important in healthcare is for
effectivenessin service delivery. With all the complexities of a healthcare facility, the chain of command becomes a highly needed structure. In my understanding, for example, it means that the CEO does not have to supervise what the RNs, LPNs, chaplains, social workers etc do in the nursing units. Even if he/she tries to do so, we can be sure he/she wouldn't know what an effective RN, LPN or physician looks like. But a unit manager can better handle the responsibility of overseeing what happens in the unit and reports to a manager higher up in the chain of command. In this way, the top managers will oversee the bigger vision and operation of the hospital including liaising with the external authorities such as government agencies and regulatory bodies.
2nd students discussion
The chain of command provides healthcare staff with a formal process to use when attempting to get satisfactory resolutions or to report concerns about questionable patient conditions or care delivery. Their are a few reason that the chain of command is important in healthcare, it serves as the hierarchy for reporting relationships from the bottom to the top of an organization and who must answer to whom. The chin of command establishes accountability and it lays out the companies line of authority and decision making powers. When their is a proper chain of command it ensure that every task, job position and department has one person assuming responsibility for performance. The level of authority is the CEO, Business owner, and front line workers, the hierarchy must be supported and respected or the company and its workers suffer.
