The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has 11 operating divisions. What are their missions?
- Administration for Children and Families (ACF)- "Let's Move! Child Care”, is an effort to promote child health by encouraging physical activity and healthier nutrition practices in early care and education settings.
- Administration on Aging (AoA) - prolonging the health and independence of senior citizens.
- Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) - mission is to produce evidence to make health care safer, higher quality, more accessible, equitable, and affordable, and to work within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and with other partners to make sure that the evidence is understood and used.
- Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) - to prevent illness and disease due to toxic or hazardous substances.
- Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)- mission is to protect America from health, safety, and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Major activities include health promotion, disease prevention, reduction of injury and disability, and public preparedness for emerging health threats.
- Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)- to provides health care insurance for one in every four Americans.
- Food and Drug Administration (FDA)- protects the public by ensuring the safety and effectiveness of foods and drugs.
- Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) -To improve access to health care for individuals who are disadvantaged because of low income, lack of insurance, medical problems, or social isolation.
- National Institutes of Health (NIH)- promoting scientific discoveries in every U.S. state and abroad which focus on diseases or body systems.
- Indian Health Service (HIS) Mission is to improve the physical, psychological, and spiritual health of these groups by ensuring access to public health services.
- Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) -works to improve the health of people with mental illness and those who abuse alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs.

Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry(ATSDR)- prevents exposure to toxic substances and the adverse health ffects and diminished quality of life associated with exposure to hazardous substances from waste sites, unplanned releases, and other surces of environmental pollution.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC)- protects the public health of the nation by providing leadership and direction in the prevention and control of diseases and other preventable conditions, and responding to public health emergencies.
Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services(CMS)- seeks to strengthen and modernize the Nation's health care system, to provide access to high quality care and improved health at lower costs.
Food and Drug Administration(FDA)- ensures that food is safe, pure, and wholesome; human and animal drugs, biological products, and medical devices are safe and effective; and electronic products that emit radiation are safe.
Health Resources and Services Adinistration(HRSA) - provides health care to people who are geographically isolated, economically or medically vulnerable.
Indian Health Service(IHS)- provides American Indians and Alaska Natives with comprehensive health services by developing and managing programs to meet their health needs.
National Institutes of Health(NIH)- supports biomedical and behavioral research with the United States and abroad, conducts research in its own laboratories and clinics, train promising young researchers, and promotes collecting and sharing medical knowledge.
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration(SAMHSA)- improves access and reduces barriers to high quality, effective programs and services for individuals who suffer from or are at risk for addictive and mental disorders, as well as for their families and communities.
Administration on Aging(AoA)- to foster the develoopmet of services to help older persons maintain their independance.
