Getting employees to focus on patients' care and needs can be a daunting task, especially when political atmosphere is so charged or toxic. But as a manager, one thing I will do to keep the employees focused on caring for the patient is to keep redirecting them to the goal and mission of the health organization. Although organizations and those at the top echelon of command may have their own political biases and deep convictions, but at least they do no make those biases overt in the mission statements and goals of the organizations. Therefore, one good way of handling politically charged discussion is to always draw the attention of the employees to the mission statements which are oftentimes apolitically patient-centered. If I notice that employees under me are beginning to discuss political topics to the point that it is negatively affecting their job productivity, I will have to begin talking to them individually in non-threatening way, and remind them that such political topics do not promote team spirit at work.
