Introduction
One of the most difficult elements of Homeric studies is how little literary material outside of the Homeric corpus exists to further our grasp of the period's cultural context. Recent research reveals that the figure we call "Homer" was the product of a huge and complex literary tradition, but only a small portion of it has survived. For another century, we will have very little continuous written Greek. Hesiod is the one exception, as he wrote two existing poems, the Works and Days and Theogony, as well as potentially a few others, such as the Catalogue of Women and the Shield of Heracles[footnoteRef:1]. While Hesiodic poetry did not expressly address heroic subjects, it was part of the same formal epic tradition as Homer, sharing crucial metrical elements. [1: M. L.
