Assignment Prompt and Context

For the final paper, you will propose a solution to a local problem in
threeparts:

  1. define the “need” or problem, including its causes and the significance of solving the problem,

  2. describe the solution or plan, and

  3. analyze the feasibility of your solution.

Moreover, you must citeat least
5 academic sources
to support your interpretation of the problem, the value of your solution, or the feasibility of yoursolution.Pay attention to all aspects of rhetoric: form, audience, logical organization, and the use of persuasive evidence.

Address a particular audience:
the person or small group of people who can bring about the proposed change. To accomplish this, you will need to find out what motivates your audience to act and what concerns your audience has. An effective proposal will speak to those motivations and placate any of their concerns.

To emphasize the logical organization of your proposal, use at least
three
headings
associated with the three parts mentioned above. The solution section can be further divided intosecondary-headings based onaspects of your plan or steps toward achieving that plan.

It is imperative that your proposal be limited in scope because you will be evaluated on the likelihood of the proposal’s success. In other words, you need to write a proposal that can create some

real change
; thus your proposal should actually be able to work. You must choose a project small enough to accomplish in the time we have remaining in the semester.

I chose

Plastic can seem unavoidable because it is found everywhere. When people are given their food to go it is in a plastic bag. There is a straw provided with nearly every drink whether it be soda at dinner or your morning coffee. The University of Florida generates plastic that cannot be recycled and that is a major problem because this affects the environment. Since plastic straws can take up to two centuries to decompose we could solve this problem because paper straws are biodegradable. This would save the UF Student Government a lot of time and energy from hiring people to pick up. Also switching to plastic straws and bags would be better for Gainesville’s wildlife. It is no secret that our school has a special place in our hearts for our gators and it is important that we protect our wildlife for the future generations. There are steps we could take in order to help our Earth and protect the people and animals of our community. By banning the use of plastic straws and bags on campus we could decrease the amount found in the community. As the UF Student Government their primary motivation would be to make the environment better for UF students.
