      • Understand the significant contribution of Asian societies to western culture

      • Critically analyse the role of material culture in shaping many value judgments, especially where these involve notions of superiority and inferiority

      • Investigate and apply the complex notions of diffusion, competition, adaption and assimilation etc, and the apply this knowledge to specific cases studies of global change, especially as this apply to Asian influences

      • Relate practical and real life examples to the theoretical concepts and explanations covered in the course







Purpose


The purpose of this assignment is to get you to show how different combinations of information can generate a new understanding of an event, object or idea. Specifically, by combining existing theories to previously unexamined ideas we can gain a better understanding of those ideas and shed light on the significant impact that Asia has had in a contemporary context. To create an authentic experience in the creation of new knowledge a peer review journal publication process is used. At the completion of the assignment steps your final special edition will be available for public consumption.



The Asian Periodical


Your team is tasked with preparing special issue ofThe Asia & the World Periodical.



The Asia & the World Periodicalis a popular journal that explores contemporary issues at the junction between Asian and Western Culture, with a particular emphasis on the transfer of ideas and objects from one sphere to the other. Each special issue consists of 3 articles and a separate overarching introduction and conclusion.



Notes for Authors/Teams


Your editorial and authorship team consists of 4 members. Membership of each team will be assigned at the beginning of semester in your first workshop.


Each member of the authorship team is responsible for authoring 1 article, or its equivalent, of the publication. 3 authors will prepare analytical articles, and the 4th is responsible for authoring the introduction and conclusion to the special edition.


Each article in the special issue ofThe Asia & the World Periodicalmust focus on a unique subject area but all articles use the theory of the 4As for analysis. The 4As act as a lens through which each of the essay writers explore an aspect of contemporary Asian culture and its relationship to the West.


The relationship between the articles in the special edition is expected to be explained within the introduction and conclusion. Specifically, the introduction explains the nature of the connection between the articles and how they should be read. The conclusion that explains why the articles are important, what the reader should have learnt about the subject matter as a result of having read the publication.




Rules for contributions






What you need to do to be successful in this assignment:

    Review with your team what is expected for this assignment is intimately connected with several other assignments in this regime.


    It is important that you understand what is being asked of you in this assignment.

  2. Engage with your team members during and beyond workshops to determine:
    a. Which of the 4As each author will focus on for your special edition;
    b. What areas of Asian culture/western culture each author is interested in;
    c. Define your individual chapter research question; and
    d. Who will be assigned to key roles within the team, such as • Editor• Author• Project manager• Leader• Task manager(Every member of your team is an individual and brings with them a unique set of skills and attributes, choose wisely and a member’s history can bring great advantages. Clear attribution of tasks and roles is essential in a good working environment. Being able to work successfully in a team is essential in contemporary employment).

  3. Develop a project management plan that includes expected timelines, deliverables and milestones. (You should include within this plan how you will deal with conflict and team members who may not be conforming to expectations).

  4. Preliminary research of your chosen area (or editors to assist more broadly with researching the theory underpinning the special edition).

  5. Redefine your research question, correcting any obvious issues with scope or slant.

  6. Write your first draft of your analytical article.

  7. Combine all drafts together

  8. Give to editor to write intro and conclusion

  9. Submit combined draft for Assignment 4 ((20%) A chance at redemption: First Complete Draft). While it is not a requirement of assignment 2 that you submit your draft for assignment 4 – it is highly advisable that you do so, otherwise you will be unable to complete assignment 5).

  10. Review feedback from Assignment 5: A second chance at redemption: collective peer review (20%)

  11. Decide as a team which feedback is valid.
    All feedback is not equal, you should review all of the feedback that you have received through the peer review process and decide which aspects you should act on and which should not. It would be useful for the team member responsible for the introduction and conclusion to keep a table of corrections and explanation of exclusions – append these at the end of the book.

  12. Review the Rules for Contributors instructions.

  13. Refine, redraft and revise your chapters and the special edition overall.


  14. Submit yourThe Asia & the World Periodical: Special Edition to MyUni by the due date.




Grading/Marking


Grades will be determined according to the following dimensions:





    • Graded on your individual contribution: your chapter, against a set rubric of expectations: what it does, how coherent it is etc.

    • Overall final product: Small% Graded on the overall product: did it fit together, was it edited correctly etc. formatting etc.
