Therapeutic Communication Analysis and Overview of Benny’s Case Study
Introduction
Communication is defined by a system in which, language, symbols and gestures are integrated to convey the correct form of message. In fact, in the general lives of people, communication strategies decide what course of action, a dialogue between two people will be s
haped. In professional world, communication is more like a complete subject (Coleman, 2011). Learning of which leads professional understanding about establishing perfect communication norms. In healthcare, Therapeutic communication is defined by identifying the issue and setting up the goals that will be achieved through providing quality of care. In particular reference given to the issues of the clients, the experts focus over the roots of the problem before intervening through perfect care plan designed for the client (Coleman, 2011). There are various steps through which counseling is done for the clients suffering from various psychological issues. The following is an analysis of the given case study of Benny, the Aboriginal, who suffers from lack of sleep and substance abuse.
Summative Overview of the Case
The client who has been taken up for this study is Benny, a young professional worker who belongs to the Aboriginal community. He has been suffering from substance abuse since past few years. He lives with his mother and three siblings. The root cause behind his substance abuse and deprivation of sleep has emerged from the separation of his parents and its psychological impact over his personality. Benny is not able to cope up with this separation. At times, family disputes happen when the discussion is made over his father because he has now left the family on its own.
Further, Benny, along with his mother, is now taking care of his three siblings. The constant work, family issues as well as the depressive thought process about the separation of his parents have led to the deprivation of sleep in his life. To avoid that deprivation, he now uses alcohol and the process of alcohol intake has made him an addict. He requires formal support and counseling, as per the general standards of psychological support. To do the same, there are some steps that will be effective from the time of first meeting with him. Rapport building and the establishment of professional communication strategies will be the first aspect of focus; the rapport will be built based on developing initial confidence in him.
Rapport Building and Establishment of the Communication Strategies
Rapport is the key to successful Therapeutic communication. By building effective rapport, the experts open up the process of counseling on a positive note (Rish et al, 2012). There are some ways through which, effective rapport building is done. “When considering the importance of communication in health care, patient safety is one of the top reasons to create an effective communication structure in any health care organization. Inadequate communication is often a leading cause of in-hospital deaths. “In a retrospective review of 14,000 in-hospital deaths, communication errors were found to be the lead cause, twice as frequent as errors due to inadequate clinical skill,” notes a 2006 study in the Clinical Biochemist Review. While communication errors can have severe consequences, these issues are often relatively easy to fix, meaning many patient deaths caused by communication errors are preventable. That fact alone is one of the most important reasons why communication is so important for...
