Leading and Empowering Self and Others

Brian finally got his coveted day off to spend on the golf course with his wife, Sharon. He couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day—great weather, early tee time, and his putting was perfect. Then came the dreaded call from Brian’s work. “Now what?” asked Sharon. “Production was just informed that our base material is back-ordered and will not be available for at least two weeks, so the office wanted to know if they should order from our backup supplier,” Brian stated. “Why do they always have to call me? They have seen me handle this same situation multiple times. They know we need the material by Friday, and they know the number is on my speed dial. I can’t have one day where my staff handles problems on their own. It drives me crazy.” To that Sharon replied, “Perhaps the problem is not with your staff; perhaps it is with you. Have you ever asked yourself why they don’t make decisions on their own?”

Now what did she mean by that? But before he could ask for clarification, Sharon was already walking down the fairway. Brian was a hard-working and efficient manager. He made sure all details were taken care of and tried to solve issues or problems to eliminate excess stress on his staff. He treated them with respect and provided positive feedback to constantly encourage his team. Then why could they not make decisions on their own? Did they not have the resources or knowledge to make the decisions, or did they lack the confidence or the authority to make decisions? If either of those options were true, what did it say about his ability to lead?

1.0 Introduction
Employees can be called as the valuable assets of every organization. The leaders required employees for attaining their goals and objectives. According to the words of Jeff Bezos the CEO of Amazon company, if we are providing fre
edom and flexibility to the employees it helps the company for reaching new heights. For getting quality returns from the employees we have to encourage the employees and we have to give more importance to employee empowerment programs and activities. In this research paper, we are analysing the problems faced by the leader Brian related to employee management. We are also considering the importance of leadership and employee engagement programs for managing the issues faced by the organization
2.0 Discussion
2.1 What factors might contribute to staff not making their own decisions? Furthermore, what should the organisation do to address this situation?
While analysing the case study we can understand that employees of the organization are facing various problems. They are not confident enough for making their own decisions and the leader brian is not providing opportunities to the employees to involve in the decision-making process. Having motivation and communication in a workplace can lead to great job performance. However, the workers did not have the opportunity to showcase their skills and abilities.
For managing the current issues, the organization has to use different tools and methods. Employee involvement is important for improving the confidence level of the employees (Dom et al 2019,p.1). The company has to ensure the participation of employees in the various activities taken place in the company, and the company has to focus on increasing the job satisfaction of the employees and they have to focus on effective retention policies. The organization also has to give importance to recognition and reward programs. The recognition and reward programs will aid the company in inspiring employee creativity, perk up productivity, and minimize staff turnover. It is noteworthy that an effective employee reward and recognition plan is the one that applies to all employees and assists in motivating the entire staff. Recognition can simple includes stating thank you, either in writing or verbally or (by a simple email or a thank you card). On the other hand, the reward can be a present, within set guidelines, that employees would most value. Competency theory states that work provides an opportunity to learn new concepts and skill effectively. Work also helps to fulfil personal as well as professional goals and objectives. As per the Maslow’s need hierarchy theory, employees will motivate when they are getting what they wanted. So the organization has to understand the needs of the employees and based on that they treat them and it helps them for managing the issues and it also helps for improving their confidence level. Kurt Lewin Change theory states that for getting maximum participation of employees for implementing the change we have to focus on the team-based approach and employee engagement programs. The theory also suggests that the managers have to use the change agents for communicating and executing new process and practices productively. With the support of effective leadership also we can motivate the people for accepting the new changes in an effective way (Fan et al 2019,p.30). We can use different methods for managing people to improve processes and activities in the organization. With the support proper communication strategies, we can reduce workplace issues. We can also introduce proper feedback and monitoring systems for evaluating the performance of the employees.
