Essay: Leadership Success

Length:2500 words (+/-10%)

Task

Jim Collins stated that a company does not go from good to great overnight but by relentlessly pushing a giant heavy flywheel in one direction, building momentum until a point of breakthrough. The power of momentum is evident in the Harvard Business Review’s (HBR 2017) ranking of the world’s best CEO’s. Judged solely on the basis of financial performance the top leader would be Amazon’s founder Jeff Bezos. However the rankings are now based on not just financial but also on environmental, social and governance (ESG) metrics. This resulted in Bezos coming in at number 71. According to the HBR researchers, the use of ESG information is driven by financial rather than ethical motives.

  1. In today’s turbulent world, how should the success of CEOs be evaluated?

  2. What are the challenges of focusing on just financial metrics to the long term success of organisations?

  3. What are the challenges leaders face in balancing financial and ESG performance metrics? Drawing on current leadership research (in the last 5 years) discuss how leaders should address these challenges.

Use examples of three current CEOs (leaders), to support your answers to questions 1, 2 and 3. Critically evaluate how each leader’s practice of leadership impacts the success of their organisation. You can use a different example for each of the questions above or use the three examples across the questions.

Today's world is highly turbulent and the CEOs have to be extremely influential to meet the challenges off the dynamic environment. The success of the CEO can is evaluated on the parameters like intellectual and emotional understanding of the external and internal environment of the company, especially during difficult times. The chief executive officer has most of the powers to manage an o
rganization. It is one of the most responsible positions in an organization and is reliability is one of the parameters for his success.
A CEO can be evaluated based on his performances. When the performances of a CEO are based on the learning that he has made from his past mistakes, and the outcome shows the learning. Then also is highly valuable for the company and society. He has all the guts to take the company to a great height. Challenges coming in the dynamic environment maybe different but some learning from the past always help and so on need to understand its importance and remember them to use at the right moment. For example, Pablo Isla, the CEO of Inditex made a choice of winning strategies. He integrated and in-store the online experience of shopping. He wanted to try to be perfect and intended on his ability to immediately respond to fashion trends using an integrated supply chain.
The ability to communicate properly with the internal and external customers is also one of the parameters to find out the value of the CEO for a company. The so one needs to understand that management is the art of getting work done by others and therefore he needs to talk to the head of the department and all the other employees with a high quality of communication skills. The second most important quality in communication is showing servant leadership. A CEO is also a good leader and therefore he should possess the skill of serving people and making them happy to make the server better for the company. For instance, Pablo Isla’s style of management is humble as per the feedback of the employees.
The quality of maintaining Public Relations also reflects a lot about the capabilities of a CEO. Being optimistic in difficult times is another important evaluative quality of a CEO. The future is always on certain and the microenvironment is the best example to prove this fact. There are theories and researchers to figure out the solutions to all the problems. A CEO needs to remember and aware of being optimistic and think in the direction of finding out the solution. It is possible to achieve everything if one is determined.
A CEO is highly understanding of the problems of both the customers and the employees of the company. Understanding the problems of the customers and suggesting solutions is present in almost every so but being sensitive towards the employees of the company decides the success of the company. If a CEO has suggestions to solve the problems of the employees, he is indirectly removing all the obstacles in achieving the objectives of the company while getting his job done creatively. The expertise in listening skills and in getting to a thoughtful process of taking decisions is also one quality that can help in evaluating the performance of a CEO. The people, who tend to speak up without listening to the matter completely, have been observed to be ignorant of facts. On the other hand, a good listener can keep all the facts in the mind and analyze them later on. He comes up with the rightly formulated strategy to deal with the problem. For example, Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, is considered as a thoughtful leader by the analysts and experts at the Harvard Business School, Fortune and Booth Company. His co-workers take him on par with other big guns in the technology industry such as Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk.
