uring the merger process. Therefore, organisations that seek on ensuring successful union should ensure that effective leadership styles are in place. However, various obstacles such as: poor financial performance levels, loss in productivity, clash in management between parties, and ineffective integration; tend to reduce the likelihood of successful mergers between organisations. In that case, effective leadership helps in reducing such obstacles when organisations merge and ensure a successful transition (Smith, n.d, pp. 2-3). Additionally, effective leadership during the merger period helps in building trust among parties and helping persons involved to develop skills necessary in managing the challenging integration period. Moreover, leadership plays a major role in ensuring visions of organisations are met, and coming up with strategies that are profit oriented. Leaders have a major role to play during the merging process as they determine on the right structure that will support their business strategy (Bellingham, 2010, p. 30).
Bhattacharyya (2010, p. 201) contends that leaders affect ways in which firms operate and function, therefore, help in strengthening the collective vision of organisations. The merger will have an immense impact, as it will ensure intercultural competency of both parties through effective leadership (Barile, 2013).
