Landscape AssignmentUnless you live outside of the NY metropolitan area, in which case you should have emailed me already about picking an alternative site, you will going to Harlem. As this is a migration course, we are interested in African American migration history and settlement in Harlem. You will use historical knowledge from the articles and books we have read thus far to situate what you see in Harlem.I recommend that you walk the length of 125th street, but it is okay to do your field study in other parts of Harlem. Please indicate exactly where you are going in the text. What should be included in your field study.Make sure you have read Robin Kelley’s chapter on Harlem and Gentrification, Bobby Wilson’s chapter in the Miyares book, and the excerpts of Wilkerson’s book on the Great Migration I assigned. You can find the Kelley piece in a folder at the bottom of the course readings section of blackboard. It should be a well written five page assignment that contains an introduction and a conclusion. The introduction should include several components. Please give a short history of the Great Migration, and more specifically, African American migration to Harlem. You should also be particular about what your walking route was.In the introduction you will also state what you were looking for when you went into the field. YOU WILL BE LOOKING FOR STRUGGLE IN THE LANDSCAPE. Harlem is going under many changes, especially on 125th street. See #5 for a more detailed explanation of what this means.A large part of the paper will be a detailed description of your journey. Tell us what you saw. Where did you see it? What was the street scene like? What were people doing? After describing what you saw, explain how struggle in the landscape played out. Essentially, you are looking for clues of the gentrification process. How is it occurring and how are people fighting against it?Consider these more specific questions: Where do you see gentrification occurring? Is there evidence of people being displaced? from their homes? From their businesses? Who is on the streets? What does that tell you about gentrification? Is Harlem changing for the better or for the worse, why? Who does Harlem belong too?Be sure to back up all your claims with what you saw!Write a conclusion. Say something meaningful about what you saw in Harlem. Link it back to struggle in the landscape and the Great Migration. Please use the e-portfolio environment to your advantage. I encourage you to include multimedia. In this case, it will be optimal if you take pictures of what you saw and include them in a photo gallery (See ‘Gallery for Photos to the left for an example). Please do not include a picture without explaining it!Please place all photos/videos in the tab to your left called ‘Gallery for Photos’. It is pretty self explanatory to use. I provided example for you to work of off. I used album covers of records I own to show you how to do it. Enjoy!
