Climate Change in Australia: Factors Influencing Climate Change Mitigation
Word Count: 1507
Abstract
The climate change is one of the most dominant issues faced by the entire world, with Australia no less affected by it. The outcome of the climate change
is the threat to national identity resulting in eco-anxiety and generation of the need to be willing to sacrifice for environmental benefits in reference to Australia. The study using an experimental group of 30 participants and a neutral group of 28 participants was conducted and 7-point Liker scale was used to analyse the identity threat, eco-anxiety, and willingness to sacrifice among participants ranging from 18 to 52 years of age. The results highlight that there exists a variable correlational theory and the prospects of willingness to sacrifice have a higher impact on identity threat, which eventually leads to eco-anxiety. The most significant situational understanding from the results obtained concludes that identity threat is a matter of concern for all the individuals i.e. ones belonging to neutral group as well as those belonging to the experimental group focusing on Australian animals.
Introduction
Background
The basic idea of climate change is associated with the concept of harmful impact of human activities on the natural environment of the surroundings. The mitigation of climate change risks is largely based on the policies developed by the government. In the work by Adil & Chohan (2020) it is verified that the development of the policies that help in mitigation of climate change associated risks is possible only when adequate importance is given to the perception and impacts of climate change. Of the different impacts that climate change has, psychological impact is one of the most evident and visible. The discussion presented by Clayton (2020) highlights that the psychological wellbeing of the individuals is affected significantly due to the mental, physical, and also social repercussions. The impact of climate change on the natural surroundings like that in Australia is the threat to the national identity. In the research concluded by Mora et al. (2018) it is clearly stated that the climate change has a threat to humanity and national identity when viewed in the cumulative manner. Thus, an urgent need to overcome these aspects associated with national natural symbols and resultant national threat as well as eco-anxiety is a cause of concern.
Aim
The aim of the undertaken study is to understand the impact of climate change on national identity of the Australian individuals while analysing the eco-anxiety due to climate change and the willingness to sacrifice for the betterment of the environment.
Research Significance
Through the outcomes that can be obtained from the undertaken research work it would be possible to attain a detailed understanding about the different aspects of climate change that impact the psychological understanding of the Australians. The ways climate change affects the national identity of the Australians can also be identified. Furthermore, the extent to which individuals are willing to sacrifice for the betterment of the climate and preservation of the eco-system; can be evaluated for the development of future policies (Hoffarth & Hodson, 2016).
Hypotheses
The research tests the hypotheses based on the available literature to reach the aim of the study.
H0: The climate change has no threat...
