2. The largest man-made natural disaster in our country was experienced in the 1930s and it was called the Dust Bowl. As per Woody, the Dust Bowl was caused because the farmers were tilling the Mid-Western plains and as a result of this the soil was left exposed. This led to the permanent damage of approximately 200 million acres of cropland by the end of 1934.
3. Microbes in the soil process organic matter and put the nutrients into a form that the plant needs. Similarly, the microbes in our guts help break down food converting it into nutrients that our body can absorb. Thus, microbes are important for human health.
4. Frtitz Haber invented the process to make synthetic nitrogen fertilizers and was also responsible for the creation of pesticides. These chemicals were then easily available to the general public. It became common for farmers to use them on the field as it was giving them a good crop. Haber’s inventions changed the approach towards farming. Instead of understanding and honoring natural processes, farmers now began using chemicals in the form of pesticides and fertilizers in increased proportions.
