1 INTRODUCTION
This paper aims to perform strategic management analysis for one of the most successful
pharmaceutical companies across the world: Biocon group. Biocon India was founded by
Kiran Mazumder Shaw in the year 1978 in a garage of a rented house after she was rejected
for seed capital by many venture capitalists. The company is headquartered in Bangalore and
has The Company has been majorly enzyme manufacturer till 1998 after which it ventured
into pharmaceutical segment and research oriented tasks. The founder and director of the
company focus on open system and no hierarchy in the organisation (Kalegaonkar, 2008)..
The company has two major segments: Syngene International Limited which is engaged in
custom research and drug discovery and other one is Clinigene which is the clinical research
organisation. Between the year 2005 and 2010, the company entered into 2200 research and
development deals in the area of pharmaceutical and bio-pharmaceutical products. The
company basically arrives to achieve excellence in biotechnology with all allied products.
The mentor Shaw majorly focusses on innovation in small molecules, recombinant proteins,
peptides and monoclonal antibodies. The company’s corporate culture is extremely invention
driven with little place for any established rules and regulations. The company has won
several awards for being the forerunner in its domain of biotechnology and enzyme
technology (Biocon official website, 2016).
2 MISSION, VISION, AND STAKEHOLDERS
2.1 Mission and a vision statement analysis
A mission is a statement that a company formulates in order to let its stakeholders know
about what its goals are in long term and how it will enable its resources and capabilities to
achieve it. A mission is a more practical and industry appropriate goal that can be applied to
understand the operational aspects of the company (Mintzberg, 2008).
The proposed mission statement for Biocon group can be as follows:
Mission: To achieve global distinction in biotechnology and pharmaceutical domain.
The above two statements come from the Biocon’s inherent commitment for excelling in the
domain of pharmaceutical and biotechnology, since its inception. The company has been a
harbinger of change in the enzyme technology in India with humble beginnings and moved
on to become one of the leading firms to discover and innovate drugs as well as biomolecules
of for the new age drugs. The core areas of Biocon’s functionalities include Diabetology,
Cardiology, Nephrology and Oncology (Biocon official website, 2016).
These areas have been the areas of inflicting huge pressure on the healthcare and thus most
number of deaths has been due to the ailments in these domains. The world needs better and
more effective drugs for limiting the deaths and terminally ill patients due to these problems
and diseases. Biocon hence has a mission to eliminate diseases by committing to the cause of
biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry. These two domains can transform how the
healthcare companies spend and incur expenses due to the terminally ill patients and the
repercussions of these diseases on other organs (Mintzberg, 2008).
A vision statement is a long term association of a company to create value or make a
difference in world and society at large. It does not reflect the operational and functional
aspects of achieving that and is largely governed by the company’s dreams rather than goals
(Mintzberg, 2008).
The proposed vision statement for Biocon group can be as follows:
Vision: To enrich comprehensive biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry by inventing
and discovering affordable biomolecules and drugs for across the earth.
The vision of the company is in line with the corporate strategy which aims to stand out
among the competitors. The company wants to further its corporate strategy of differentiation
based on innovative biomolecules and drug discovery. This vision can be accomplished by
enabling the leadership of the company to incorporate the culture of openness and diversity in
terms of varied background of the talent which can be used for bridging the gaps in the
knowledge base of the company. The competitive advantage of Biocon is to enhance the drug
discovery and invest in clinical research trials for effective and ethical drug formulations
(Véronique 2001).
The company needs to invest in nurturing its talent force to venture into the nutraceuticals
which is said to be the most lucrative segment of nutrition based products. The wellbeing and
comprehensive fitness products can be the new driver for growth as well as differentiation
factor with respect to the other competitors in the pharmaceuticals. The company also has
first mover advantage in its domestic market as Biotech Company and hence has established
its different brand image as compared to other pharma companies such as Pfizer, Lupin, Dr.
Reddy’s and Cipla. These companies have been pharma giants since many years but Biocon
holds distinction among them for being the first company that ventured into specialty
chemicals and biomolecules that enhanced the performance of the products and can be used
as extenders, binders and accompaniments (Véronique 2001). These...
