Introduction
The report focuses on the fundamentals of data communication and networking that were covered over a period of eleven week in the course. The focus of the unit was on various aspects of networking like establishing different types of networks, their standards, setting up enterprise network, home network, network security, data transmission through signals, etc. Reflecting on my personal learnings from the course, this report discusses OSI Model, data into signal conversion, Bluetooth technology, Universal Serial Bus Interface, home wireless network, network congestion, VPN, computer-telephone integration, JPG data compression mechanism and error control. Each of the selected topics has been referred from academic resources to justify the discussions.
Week 1- OSI Model
Week 1 focused on the basic concept of data communication and how it occurs through communication networks. It is clearly demonstrated how computer network is built using desktop, laptop or phone. This included OSI model, TCP/IP protocol and their differences. OSI includes application, presentation, session, transport, network, data link and physical layers. TCP/IP suite includes Application, transport, network, data link and physical layers. The logical and physical connections are explained with an analogy of flow of data through bureaucracy and the layers of the networking model.
I studied OSI model in detail after understanding the technologies involved. My experience was that it is complicated to organize everything based on OSI layers and it led to overanalyzing the model. The application, presentation and session layers have fuzzy boundaries and some protocols are designed to fit at these layers with some protocols overlapping over all three layers.
I observed from learning about networking that OSI reference model is a very helpful tool but it requires a simplistic understanding of each device and device interfaces which implement the layers. OSI worked well with LAN. I realized that OSI Model defines framework for understanding computer networks. However, not all networking components, protocols and technologies fall into its strict layering architecture.
Week 2- Data into Signal Conversion
Week 2 discussed techniques of digital encoding, shift keying and common digitization. Data codes were explained with their role in communication systems. Four combinations of data and signal were described. Analog and digital data and signals were clearly explained. Analog signals can be converted to digital using techniques of delta modulation and code modulation. Data Codes ASCII, Unicode and EBCDIC use different sets of characters to represent and transmit data.
It was interesting to note how data is converted into signals. Four combinations of analog and digital data can be transmitted using analog or digital signals.
Week 3- Bluetooth
Week 3 discussion started with details of twisted pair wire, Coaxial and fiber-optic cables. It focused on different wireless media transmission like terrestrial and satellite microwave transmission systems, cellular phone, WiMax broadband, Bluetooth, Wide Area Networks, ZigBee, near-field and ultra-wideband communications. The technologies cater to specific applications. Therefore, the lecture discussed the factors that should be considered while selecting the medium for applications.
I read 2 articles on Bluetooth technology and consolidated major advantages of the technology. It can also be used to create IoT platform, owing to its low battery consumption, low cost and low weight (Canham, 2017). It is standardized worldwide which makes it preferable choice. A long-range Bluetooth can be used in educational field to align goals of students with teachers and classrooms. It was interesting to know that the fundamentals of this technology (Shorey, 2000) are applicable in creating IoT campus for adaptive education. It will require certain hardware advancements and data from several devices can be fed to an access controller in order to manage educational resources in real time. I will review more literature on how to use Bluetooth for data interface and simple development while setting up an education environment.
Week 4- Universal Serial Bus Interface
This lecture introduced interfacing between computer and peripheral. It discussed point-to-point connects and multipoint connections between computer terminal and mainframe. Components of interface such as electrical, mechanical, functional and procedural components were explained. It is recommended to study about USB (Universal Serial Bus) interface and...
