Kelly believed that all people are scientists to a certain extent. All people try to predict and control events in their world much as scientists do in developing and testing hypotheses. In attempting to understand and control our worlds, according to Kelly, we develop personal constructs, which we use to help ourselves predict events as they unfold in our lives. For example, if we construe the world as hostile, we act in certain ways to adapt and protect ourselves; likewise, we adapt accordingly if we view the world as inherently good, or dangerous, or romantic, and so forth. If a personal construct helps us to handle a situation effectively, we continue to use that construct. If a personal construct proves faulty, we begin changing the construct to better suit our needs. So how do you construe the world? What are two of your personal constructs? What evidence do you have to support your use of them?
