Just as counselors assist clients in obtaining optimal wellness, so too do they need to attend to their own well-being. Wellness is essentially a measure of a person’s emotional, spiritual, physical, social, and professional health. Counselor burnout is one indication that a counselor is not well in at least one of these areas and often results in clients not receiving the best services from their counselors (Lawson &
Myers, 2011). Burnout can be the result of a number of things like over-taxed caseloads, ineffective or insufficient supervision, limited agency resources, lack of balance in personal and professional life, and compassion fatigue or vicarious trauma (Lee, Cho, Kissinger, & Ogle, 2010). What strategies can you use to prevent your burnout as a professional clinical mental health counselor?
