Jerrod is a 16-year-old Hispanic youth with moderate to severe developmental disabilities and mental retardation. He is cared for by his mother in their home. Jerrod has been admitted for possible seizure activity after his mother reported that he began atypical twitching and jerking of the extremities. The mother reports that Jerrod was unresponsive to her commands throughout the episode, which lasted approximately 4 to 5 minutes. On further questioning, Jerrod’s mother discloses that until approximately 6 months ago he attended a day care center for individuals with disabilities. However, due to his increased unpredictable irritability and combative behavior, his mother feared Jerrod venturing outside of the home. Typically, Jerrod spends his days watching television in a dark room or staring endlessly at a fish tank. Additionally, Jerrod is extremely selective about food intake and refuses to consume any dairy products, eggs, fish, or cereals. His daily intake consists mostly of chicken tenders and French fries.
