Jane is a pregnant health professions student who does not want to treat a patient with AIDS in the intensive care unit. Thinking it is because of her pregnant condition, her clinical supervisor assures herhat she is safe as long as she uses the universal precautions designed to make the treatment of patients with infectious diseases safe for everyone. Jane still hesitates, saying, “I know it’s irrational, but I’m afraid I will not be effective because I’m so afraid of hurting my baby.” She pauses and then adds, “To be honest, I also feel it is God’s will if some people get AIDS.”

Are either or both of Jane’s reasons sufficiently compelling to warrant her being excused from assignment to this patient? Why or why not? What type of ethical problem faces her clinical supervisor? Describe how you have arrived at this conclusion using the three features of any ethical problem.
