Jane is a 32-year-old woman who is having her annual physical evaluation with her nurse practitioner. As the nurse practitioner is reviewing the family history, Jane tells her that she is adopted but recently learned about her biological mother’s family history. Her biological mother died from breast cancer at age 41. Her biological mother apparently had a sister who died in her 30s from cancer of the ovaries. Jane has also learned that she has a biological sister who was treated for breast cancer when she was 38 years old. Jane tells the nurse practitioner that she is concerned about her risk for developing breast cancer and wants to know what she can do “to know whether I will get breast cancer and what I can do.” Jane’s family history of breast and ovarian cancer suggest what type of inheritance pattern? How could the nurse practitioner respond to Jane’s concerns?
