Introduction
    Lifespan development in general is known as the process of human development from birth or conception of the individuals to their death. Lifespan development is considered as a holistic approach, through which an understanding of social, psychological, emotional and cognitive changes that people go through in a lifespan can be developed. Some of the popular lifespan theories given by well-known theorists include Erikson’s psychological stage theory, Freud’s psychoanalytic theory and Piaget’s cognitive development stage theory. Here, the theory given by Piaget has been discussed in detail and its comparison to the other two prominent lifespan development theories has been made.
Piaget’s Cognitive Development Stage Theory
Psychologist Jean Piaget of the Swiss origin created the theory in the year 1936. It is a comprehensive theory, which discusses about human intelligence and its nature. The theory is based on the notion that a child has the capability of constructing the mental model of the world. According to this theory, intelligence is not a fixed trait rather it is a cognitive developmental process because of the interactions between the children and their surrounding environment as they mature biologically (McLeod, 2018).
