The Assignment Brief  Format: Individual work - research paper  Length: ~2,000 words Description: The final assessment task in this course requires the completion of a written research paper/ essay. This assessment task requires you to interrogate and report upon a major problem or issue currently facing water or catchment managers. To complete this task you need firstly to identify a water or catchment management problem/topic (from Australia or around the world) that is of interest to you. The problem/issue can range from a specific issue (e.g., the management of pollution at a particular location) to a regional, national, or international issue (e.g., using regulatory frameworks to enable sustainable water or catchment management in Australia or the need for integrated environmental management). Note: these examples represent broad indicative statements of possible problems/topics. You have considerable scope to identify your own topic of interest as long as it is relevant to the general field of sustainable water management. Once you have selected an issue/topic you will then write a research paper/ essay that: • Describes the problem or issue; • Critically analyses the issue, including an assessment of relevant policy, social and scientific (including biological) factors; • Explores the current and potential management aspects of the issue; and • Argues a constructive way forward. For this assessment task you need to utilise the academic literature to develop and support your arguments. Although you may use ‘grey’ literature (e.g., reports, unpublished theses, fact sheets, etc.) these should not comprise the bulk of your supporting resources. Rather, you need to investigate debates being undertaken in the peer-reviewed literature. Assessment Criteria 1. Structure and scope (25%) Did the work include a clear aim that explained its intended purpose, and was the material presented in a logical way. 2. Effort and understanding (25%) Did the work demonstrate a familiarity with relevant concepts and engage with relevant literature. 3. Originality (25%) Did the work show evidence of judgement and critical analysis of the material 4. Written expression (20%) Was the work well expressed (i.e. was the writing fluent). Did it contain grammatical sentences and correct punctuation? Was the language suitably ‘academic’ in tone and content? Was the writing succinct and was the paper of an appropriate length? 5. Layout and referencing (5%) Did the work look professional? Were sources appropriately cited (in terms of formatting) in the text. Was the reference list appropriately formatted? Introduction
Water is a necessary resource that is required by every living entity on this planet fro
m plants, to animals and human beings. Even if earth consist enough water bodies, still the total potable water is only 1% and even if recyclable nature of this resource is considered, it still requires a sustainable use. This is majorly because due to increasing population accompanied by global warming, global precipitation rates are not only reduced but also they become irregular
As a result, some nations receives ample precipitation, which has the potential to full fill their water needs however, some nations do not and therefore a global concept of sustainable water use is required so that every individual in every nation could have equal water availability. In this essay, sustainable water management and issues related to the management are being discussed along with the possible reforms and provisions.
Water and associated problems
Being a most necessary resource for the survival water is being utilized in almost every activity; however, these normal activities do not affect or cause water crises instead the misuse of water during these activities leads to water crises. The overall water availability is fulfilled through the ground water and the fresh water rivers and lakes. However, out of overall global population 844 million people do not have access to potable water that is 1 out of every 9 individuals in this world cannot afford to have potable water (Inclusive Social Department, 2019).
Due to this, water crises emerged out as the number 4 global risk in terms of impact to the society (Water.org, 2019). Water crises arise majorly due to certain reasons, as supported by Barlow and Clarke (2017), such as the misuse of available water and unavailability or non-usage of water conservation techniques. Due to this, major rivers such as Colorado river in western U.S and Yellow river in China no longer reaches the sea that is they dry even before reaching the sea because of the over pumping of the aquifers and inability to save the over pumped water.
Moreover, due to increasing industrialization and globalization more land is being humanized that is had been indulged in human activities due to which, major reservoirs such as the wetlands have become lost. These are important because even if the water is non-potable for human use, it still contributes towards the evaporation and evaporation that is maintained water cycle, and as a result, precipitation now vary greatly in quantity as well as geographic locations. Poff et al. (2016) suggested that even if humans are unable to solve the issue of disturbed water cycle, they could still try to maintain the preexisting equilibrium by inculcating sustainable water management strategies, which provides techniques for an efficient water consumption and therefore, can also prove as a rationale towards the efforts in water conservation.
Critical analysis of the issue and management policies
Water is a finite as well as an irreplaceable source that can only renewed. Any other alternative of water has not yet been discovered that livings systems can accept. Moreover, with the increasing global population water renewal had emerged as a difficult task and therefore, along with water renewal, which is a natural process, water management is also required. Water management policies do not affect the water volume or percentage on this earth, even the do not affect the renewability of water therefore over all water management policies has nothing to do with the naturally occurring water cycle instead it deals the consumption statistics or the usage (Inclusive Social Department, 2019).
Water consumption has increased, which is acceptable due to the increase in population. However, the misuse of water has also increased, which cannot be accepted since, total percentage of water is according to the carrying capacity of nature and therefore, water wastage will ultimately result into non-availability of water, which is now a current scenario being faced by African countries where adequate water supply is not available. Hence, there have been applied certain strategies at global as well as national levels, which focuses towards the improvement in water consumption patterns and some of them...
