1 Instructions for APA Assignment There are two parts to this assignment. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully for each part. There is a PDF file in the dropbox of this assignment to assist you in finding these common errors. Part I: Find the Errors Below are parts of an essay in APA format with 7 errors total. Find these errors and highlight the error. Then in RED, type in the correction. You should be able to highlight and type red using the tools on the Home Page in Microsoft Word. See picture below: 1. In-text citations are super important when paraphrasing or quoting a resource. It’s important to give credit where credit is due. It’s also important to state the in-text citation correctly. In addition to giving credit where credit is due, APA employs a variety of different formatting styles. Find the formatting error below and state the correction. The doctor is in—your living room! In today’s world, teletherapy (a virtual session with a psychiatrist, a psychologist, or a counselor) has become widely available. And clearly, there is a need for it. In the United States, for instance, “approximately 25% of the population experiences a mental health disorder during a given year and 50% in their lifetimes.” (Taylor et al., 2020, p. 2) The recent pandemic has undoubtedly added to those percentages. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that people are turning to teletherapy to help manage mental health issues more effectively and more conveniently. 2. Another common error with in-text citation is knowing what information to include. Find that error and state the correction. After the start of the pandemic, the government changed these requirements, allowing doctors to bill for telehealth sessions the same way they do for office visits (Bednar, J., 2020). This has made telemedicine—including teletherapy—much more accessible to the American public. 3. There are two types of in-text citations, parenthetical, and narrative citations. Parenthetical citations are like the ones above with (Last name, Year). Narrative citations are when the writer wants to highlight the author(s). A narrative citation often looks like: According to (copyright year). Find the error below with the narrative citation. According to Taylor et al., “to increase reach, the next optimization strategy might be to add the use of targeted Facebook advertisements, followed by using both targeted Facebook and Google advertisements” (p. 2). While Facebook and Google advertisements may be effective, they can also be quite pricey. Alternate approaches, such as web-based screening and direct emails, may be used to increase outreach (Taylor et al., 2020). 4. Here is another in-text citation mistake that people make. For this one you might need to check the reference list to make the correction. The in-text citation should correspond with the full reference so the reader can refer to the reference page to access the original works. However, teletherapy can be a lifeline for individuals who need counseling but cannot or would prefer not to visit a counseling center. Issues such as concern about social stigma, scheduling conflicts, geographical limitations, or disability may also keep individuals from reaching out for help. For these individuals, teletherapy can offer a safe alternative, and it may even save lives (“Therapy for the Snapchat Generation,” 2020). The last three mistakes are in the Reference list. 5. Below there is a very common mistake people make when listing their references. Can you find it? Don’t forget to make the correction. References Bednar, J. (2020, August 3). Taking the Long View: Pandemic Opens Door to a Permanent Role for Telehealth. BusinessWest, 37(7), 34. 6. Where is the mistake in this reference? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1SiRDluT1cCBS Sunday Morning. (2020, April 5). Teletherapy: Aiding patients while social distancing. [Video]. YouTube. 7. Finally, can you find the last mistake and make the correction? Kafka, Alexander C. (2020, February 21). Therapy for the Snapchat generation. Chronicle of Higher Education, 66(22). Part II: Summarize Article and Write Reference: In this part you will choose an article below and summarize this article using an in-text citation and then reference the article.
