Rajdeep Purewal (100385494) October 31, 2020 ENGQ 1099 Argue Against Students Being Graded Thesis: Grades should not be continued in school, as grades become the focus of academic education rather than the topics or ideas that are learnt. Students are often more stressed out trying to achieve the highest attainable mark rather than putting in their own thought into their work. Henry Gonzales; This source talks about how students' main point of discussion is often grades or marks, many do not express interest in material learned inside the class. At the end of each semester students are scrambling to memorize material for tests rather than utilize material in other means. Parents often emphasize their children to get good grades, forget that grades do not define their intelligence. This falls into my topic due to students not caring too much more than their grades, many students spend their day trying to perfect what they take back to school rather than have time to pursue other interests. Kim Klein; Gardes Fail at Motivating Students This source explains how, due the pandemic schools have resulted in using “Zoom” for online classing. This has worked before but now it's at the point where students are tuning out and disengaging. Removing the grading system some fear the students will work less hard and pay less attention. What is argued is why write an essay if you don’t have the motivation to get an “A”. This relates to my research question because it shows what the negatives of a no grading system can look like, some students may not want to put in an effort if they know they will not be held back for it. Emma Austin; Grades vs Learning- Shifting Attention to What’s Important This resource explains how the grading is a pretty recent phenomenon dating back to the 1940s. This is used to determine the readiness and accomplishment of a students ability. Not being able to get a good grade may affect the self worth of a student's mind. In our world how often do you see the best students accomplish more than the average student. This falls into my topic because it shows the history of the education system and how it’s been changed now. Sophie Ann; Failing Grades In this resource Sophie mentions a little about why students have failing grades. As she mentioned that students focus on raising their grades instead of learning. Students that fail in their grades are most likely to be lost on what their goal in their life is. However, students that have failing grades feel worthless and that is why they give up, and also leads to laziness in their interest in studying. This relates to my research question because it mentions why students have failing grades, but just because their grades are bad does not mean that they are not intelligent. Amy Bell; Kids May Go to School to Learn the ABCs, but We Shouldn't Be Grading Them with Letters This resource was written by Amy Bell. She provides a realistic example of her daughter's excellent grades in school. On the other hand, her son did not have a higher grade just like his sister, but Amy found that her son was as smart as his sister. She mentions that getting lower grades can make her son feel that he is a failure and making higher grades can give the false illusion that they've mastered a subject and no longer need to challenge themselves. This source relates to my research question as it proves that Amy is also arguing that students should not be graded as everyone's brain is different, not everyone has the same quality and intelligence for the same subject. ______________________________________________________ Austin, Emma. “Grades vs Learning - Shifting Attention to What's Important.” The Graide Network, The Graide Network, 10 Aug. 2018, www.thegraidenetwork.com/blog-all/2018/8/1/retiring-the-red-pen-shifting-attention-from-grades-to-learning. Failing Grades, 21 Oct. 2018, gradedereliction.wordpress.com/. ______________________________________________________ Topic: 1 In the classroom it is found that some teachers use grading system to measure the skill of the students. With the help of the grading system teachers divide the students in various groups. But it has some bad aspects. Some teachers think that grading system is appropriate, and it helps to measure the proper skill of the student. But it is also true that grading system causes inferiority problem in the students. Some students think themselves inferior to others. They may surrender to their inability. They may lose interest to the study. Topic: 2 There are many educational institutions where grading system is followed, and it is considered the best system. In this system we find good result in the grading system. We find that there is a mentality of competition among the students. The teachers can take extra care for the students who you have not been able to secure good grade. It is necessary because the teacher needs to understand the feedback of the learning and the feedback of the learning is best possible through grading system. Topic: 3 Grading system is a type of evolution process. But it is true that grading system does not reflect all the aspects and development of a student. On the basis of examination grade is given to the student. All the aspects of the students are not focused. On the other hand, grading system does not focus all the fields of knowledge. It does not focus the skills like creativity, group activities and so on.
