SOB Project Proposal Template School of Business Project Description   (At appropriate AQF Level7 and 9)   1 Project Title: ROI Thermodynamics Return on Investment for energy in relation to the Laws of Thermodynamics Name of Industry Placement Agent (if any): Agent Name:   CAREERDC GROUP PTY. LTD. Contact Name:   Miqdad Hassan Contact number:   02 7209 3850 Email:   [email protected] Industry Client Details (Compulsory for all proposals): Company Name:   Ditch Technology Pty Ltd (DitchTech) ABN:   19644974550 Company address:   Suite 72/20-40 Meagher Street, Chippendale NSW 2008 Company Profile:   Smart Ocean technological services & solutions. Underwater IoT (Internet of Things). Ocean networks & drone arrays. Website:   www.ditchtech.com.au www.linkedin.com/company/ditchtech Industry Professional (Contact) Name: Dirk Hertford Client email:   [email protected] Contact Number:   02 7209 3850 Brief profile of the industry professional:  Dirk is the founder & CEO of DitchTech. He has been a manager, entrepreneur & technologist with over 11 years experience in Australian and International Projects, with a background in economics. 2 Project Definition: Please complete the fields below. 1. Background and Rationale for the project   Please explain why it is important for this project to be undertaken by discussing  the current problems or challenges faced by the client and the business.  • DitchTech works with wave energy, which is an emerging technology. • There is much potential in this technology and it is important to effectively evaluate where to focus development for maximum impact. • All energy types are subject to the Laws of Thermodynamics. • This project will examine the Return on Investment (ROI) for energy generation, transmission, storage and use in relation to the Laws of Thermodynamics. • Energy is the capacity of a physical system to do work • Energy is measured in joules (J) or watt-hours (Wh). • Power is the amount of energy consumed/produced per unit time. • Power is measured in watts. • toe: Tonne of Oil equivalent • How much total energy can the system store? (watt-hours) • How much power can it deliver at any moment? (watts) • Return on Investment (ROI): profit earned divided by cost of investment. • Energy efficiency: energy output divided by energy input. • 1st Law of Thermodynamics (aka Law of Conservation of Energy): Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can only change form. • 2nd Law of Thermodynamics: Disorder increases, energy becomes less useable, efficiency of any process is less than 100%. • DitchTech is seeking a tool to enable Return on Investment to be evaluated for energy efficiency in the 4 energy stages: generation, transmission, storage and use. 2. Project Goals and Objectives   Please address the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals    (https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/sustainable-development-goals/)  when setting up the project goals and objectives. You may address more than one  goal.  • UN Sustainable Development Goals related: 7 Affordable & Clean Energy, 8 Decent Work & Economic Growth, 9 Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure, 12 Responsible Consumption & Production, 14 Ocean • Show relationship between ROI and energy efficiency. • Easy way to calculate ROI for each of the 4 stages: generate, transmit, store & use. • Understand energy efficiency for the 4 stages: generate, transmit, store & use. • Analysis to help direct development for wave energy based on ROI for potential energy efficiency in different areas. • Table and calculation to enable Return on Investment to be evaluated for energy efficiency in the 4 energy stages: generation, transmission, storage and use. 3 3. Project Resources   Please list the resources, i.e. hardware, software, databases, etc., that this  project requires and the party that will provide the resources.  Online file system with many relevant documents, pre-existing research, team well versed in subject matter. 4. Desired Outcomes/Deliverables   Please describe the expected outcomes or deliverables at the completion of this  project. The outcomes/deliverables should be measurable and actionable within the  time frame of the project. Also, please consider the implications or lessons to be learnt  when writing up the outcomes/deliverables.  ● Tables: 4 stages, energy efficiency, cost, profit ● Calculation: ROI for energy efficiency at each stage ● Analysis: areas to focus development for wave energy ● Relationship explained: ROI & energy efficiency 5. Add any Other information you wish on the project   Please provide any other information that is important and relevant for this project.  4 5 Proposal  Prepared/Submitted by:  Dirk Hertford Signature:    Date:   23/02/2021 For use by the SoB Project Review Board: Review Date:    Approval Date:    Chair’s Signature:
